Rouge House is a colorful and creative thrift store and “art collective” that continues to evolve and
grow in its convenient location near LSU at 1750 Brightside Drive.
More than just a quality thrift venue, Rouge House draws the talent of dozens of local artists—
providing a showcase for jewelry makers, crocheters, print makers, and “upcyclers.”
“I got my start making jewelry,” says owner Samantha Abshire, who opened Rouge House two
years ago as a “time warp boutique” where customers and artists alike can find common ground as well as
a “curated” fashion sense.
“Being a thrift store, we get a lot of donations—older, sometimes torn or missing buttons,” says
Samantha. “I either sell as-is, or upcycle, mending or adding patches.” Samantha says she is planning
mending workshops to share the art of upcycling to bring value to vintage clothing. “I believe mending
clothes is a dying skill.”
Samantha is always looking to give back to the public and artisan community who have
supported her store. Unsold clothing items are donated to children’s and women’s shelters, and
“Community Closets” are opening on Perkins Road and Government Street. “People can add, swap, or
take needed clothing completely free, or simply donate their own. The idea is to re-purpose clothing and
reduce clothing waste.”
Clothing donations from the public are encouraged, and potential art vendors can apply to the store
to sell their artwork.
Customers praise the low prices and cool vibe of this thrift and art collective, locally owned and
ready for the next chapter of creativity and sustainability.
